When you use the Windows download buttons, we record the start of the redirect to the installer. This helps us understand how often N@il is downloaded and which regions, browsers and device types are represented. A download start does not prove a completed transfer, an installation or a unique person.
We store the IP address, time, download identifier, configured installer version and information derived from the browser identification about the browser, operating system and device type (computer, tablet or smartphone). The full browser identification is not stored in the statistics. Automated requests may be identified separately as bots; browser and device classifications are estimates and may be inaccurate.
A local GeoIP database is used to associate the IP address with an approximate location, region or country. No GPS permission is requested. Mobile networks, VPNs or corporate connections may cause this location to differ from the actual location. Missing location data is treated as unknown.
Location lookup takes place on our server. Visitor IP addresses are not sent to an external GeoIP service for this purpose. The map also loads its data locally. Geolocation data: IP Geolocation by DB-IP, DB-IP Lite; map data: Natural Earth.
IP addresses and associated details are removed from the active statistics database after 30 days by default, on the next download or statistics request. Aggregated daily totals by download identifier and version remain without IP addresses. Totals stored before detailed analysis was introduced are not retrospectively enriched with IP or location data.
Download statistics do not use analytics cookies or persistent visitor identifiers, and do not build cross-site visitor profiles. Server access logs and backups are separate from the statistics database and follow the hosting and backup configuration.
